Hello everyone, I'm George and I live and work in Athens, Greece. I am 43 years old, married
with two children (four and two years old) and I've been working as an
archaeologist for the last fifteen years. I got a BA degree at
University College London (1992, classical arcchaeology), spent about
ten years in Laconia, southern greece, an hour's drive from Sparta, in a
cave site," Alepotrypa cave". At present I work for the department of
cave archaeology (Ephorate of speleology), greek ministry of culture,
where I deal mainly with protecting known cave sites and exploring new
caves, cataloguing material fom past excavations, et.c. While working
in Alepotrypa cave I excavated quite a lot (burials and habitation areas
inside the cave) and became interested in the
neolithic period, the transition from neolithic to Bronze Age and
neolithic pottery. I have also taken part in underwater excavations in
Greece.
I've been thinking of doing postgraduate studies for a long time but it was only a year ago that I made a decision to apply for the landscape archaeology course at Birmingham, since I took part in a project that started in 2010 and involved field survey, GIS, geophysical survey, a bit of excavation, and thought that I could apply some of these methods in cave archaeology.
